ICSH welcomes central role proposed for Voluntary Housing Associations
The Minster for Housing Willie Penrose, T.D. has announced a new housing policy highlighting an increasingly prominent role for the voluntary and co-operative housing sector in the future delivery of social housing. The Irish Council for Social Housing (ICSH), the national federation for voluntary housing associations, welcomed the shift in government policy away from the promotion of home ownership to a more ‘tenure neutral’ response and the central role for approved housing bodies in enabling all household to access good quality housing appropriate to household circumstances and in their particular community of choice.
Speaking at the conference, Mr Donal McManus, ICSH Executive Director, said “This is a watershed in the provision of social housing and the voluntary housing sector is committed to working in partnership with key stakeholders including local authorities, Department of Environment, Community and Local Government, the Housing Finance Agency and other financial institutions”. He added, “the government needs to ensure that the sector has the financial and regulatory tools to meet the significant challenge of the new role”.
