This Health and Addiction care facility is for adults experiencing homelessness and provides critical support services such as detox, Step-up Step-down intermediate care, blood borne virus treatment and recovery supported short stay accommodation. The facility provides 100 bedrooms (all ensuite) with dining, communal, treatment, counselling and associated spaces. Usher’s Island meets an identified existing gap in existing services assisting people experiencing homelessness to address health issues facilitating clients and secure and successfully retain permanent housing.
The building is located on the site of the original Usher’s Island service established by Dublin Simon Community in 1989, and is a landmark building providing a bookend to the buildings on the Southern side of the River Liffey. This was a very important consideration in the design and planning of the building as it is the dominant structure when entering Dublin City Centre from Phoenix Park and Heuston Station. The building was handed over to the operational teams and occupied in October 2024.
