Safe Home Ireland was established in 2000 to assist older qualifying Irish born emigrants to explore the option of returning to live in their native areas. Over the years, Safe Home has evolved from simply providing a housing option for older Irish born emigrants and their work is now spread across the 26 counties, providing supports to applicants at every stage of their journey back to Ireland.
Listen to CEO Karen McHugh, herself a returned migrant, having worked as Director of London based Brent Irish Advisory Service for over 10 years. Karen explains that in 2001, through the Capital Assistance Scheme (CAS), older Irish-born immigrants who lived abroad could return home to Ireland under the scheme. And that enabled Safe Home Ireland to develop into a national organisation that could support Irish people abroad to return home.
