
VOLUNTARY BOARD MEMBER
Position
Sonas Domestic Violence Charity CLG is looking for a Board member, preferably from the social housing sector, specifically with a Property Management and/or Development background, to join the Board of Directors in a voluntary capacity. The successful candidate will act as a Board member, contributing to all aspects of the charity’s operations.
About Sonas Domestic Violence Charity
Sonas is the largest provider of frontline services to women and children experiencing domestic abuse in the greater Dublin region. We support women and children experiencing domestic abuse by providing effective, quality services, including refuge, advice, support, court accompaniment, outreach, and accommodation-based services. We advocate on their behalf with other services and on issues that impact their safety, welfare, and well-being.
The Role
Sonas is seeking a Board member with a background in the social housing sector, who also has an interest in the social care, voluntary, or charity sector. Some practical experience in this sector would be an advantage but is not essential.
Responsibilities will include the following:
- Providing input into the strategic direction of the organisation and contributing with insight, oversight, and experience in the social housing/AHB sector.
- Providing advice and guidance to the Board and Executive Team on matters relating to AHB/social housing regulations, tenancy management, property acquisition/development, and maintenance. Familiarity/ experience in AHBRA reporting requirements and Fixed Assets Management would be advantageous.
- Reviewing and making recommendations on significant property-related investments and projects put forward by the Executive Team and making recommendations to the Board accordingly.
- Having the requisite knowledge or the willingness to obtain knowledge in relation to compliance with Charity and AHB regulations.
- Reviewing the annual statutory financial statements for accuracy, completeness, and compliance, particularly as they relate to housing assets and their operations.
- Providing advice and guidance in relation to risk management for Sonas, including risks associated with property management and housing regulations.
Essential Skills/Qualities required for the role:
- An understanding of and commitment to the mission and values of Sonas.
- Experience in social housing, AHBs, social housing development and operations, or a related field.
- Commitment to the highest levels of corporate governance and ethics.
- Previous experience on a board would be an advantage but is not essential.
Board Meetings
Board meetings are held 6 times a year (as a minimum) using a combination of in-person and Zoom-style meetings. The successful candidate will be asked to join a Housing & Property sub-committee.
